our region

The Awatere Valley is a sub-region of Marlborough, the world famous wine region that put New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the map.

A late starter – vines were first planted here in only 1986 – the Awatere has fast-tracked its way to premium wine region status thanks to impressive wines with distinctive mineral characters.

Climate and soil both play a part in distinguishing the Awatere from other parts of Marlborough. A later harvest often gives Awatere Valley vines a longer ripening period in which to develop intense flavours, and a lack of underground water in the free draining glacial gravel soils limits both the vigour and yield of its vines. This encourages vine ‘balance’ and helps the wine to concentrate its energy on its grapes resulting in ripe, concentrated fruit.
